Settlement in the UK
UK Settlement or Indefinite Leave to Remain allows you to live and work in the UK without restrictions on length of stay. You will also have access to such benefits as government-funded medical care, education, and a pathway to British citizenship.

Work Permit Holder
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Work Permit Holder category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year;
- Have been employed continuously in the UK throughout the 5 year period of continuous residence under the terms of your work permit;
- Your employer sponsor must certify that you are still needed in the current position you hold; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Highly Skilled Migrant
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Highly Skilled Migrant category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year;
- Have been financially responsible for yourself and any dependents for the 5-year period of continuous residence without aid from public funds;
- Are currently economically active in a the UK in employment, self-employment, or a combination of both; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Overseas Representative
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the "Representatives of overseas newspapers, news agencies, and broadcasting organisation" category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year;
- Your employer sponsor must certify that you are still needed in the current position you hold; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
UK Ancestry
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the UK Ancestry category are:
- Be a Commonwealth citizen;
- Be aged 17 or older;
- Provide proof that one of your grandparents was born in the UK;
- Be able to work and intend to seek employment in the UK;
- Be able to financially accommodate yourself in the UK without aid of public funds;
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Businessperson
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Business category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year;
- Submit audited accounts for the first 4 years of trading and management accounts for the 5th year; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Innovator
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Innovator category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Investor
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Investor category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Writer, Composer, or Artist
The general requirements to file for Writer, Composer, or Artist under the Innovator category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Tier 1 Migrant, Tier 2 Migrant
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Tier 1 Migrant, Tier 2 Migrant category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 5 years, not being absent for a period longer than 180 days during each year;
- Meet the minimum of 75 points of the points-based system for your category; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Ex-HM Forces
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Ex-HM Forces category are:
- Have completed at least four years' servicee with HM Forces
- Was discharged from HM Forces on completion of engagement;
- Was not discharged from HM Forces more than 2 years prior to the date on which the application is made; and
- Hold a valid UK entry clearance for entry in this capacity.
Long-Residence in the UK
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Long-Residence category are:
- Have been in the UK for a period of continuous residence lasting 10 years during which you have not been absent for a period of 6 months or more;
- Be a lawful resident of the UK; and
- Have sufficient English language ability and knowledge of life in the UK.
Bereaved Partner
The general requirements to file for UK settlement under the Bereaved Partner category are:
- Be present in the UK;
- Not fall under the grounds of S-ILR (suitability - indefinite leave to remain);
- Your grant of limited leave must have been as a partner of a British citizen or settled person or a bereaved partner;
- Your partner must be deceased; and
- At the time of your partner's death the relationship must have been genuine and subsisting and both parties must have intended to stay permanently in the UK.
